Hi all! My daughter sent me this. I’m forwarding it because this kid has thrown down the gauntlet in no uncertain terms. I take this as a CLOSURE and firmly believe that from now on its the children who will lead the way.

This video submitted by Dalry is of an astounding speech delivered by a girl from Canada who silenced the international Environmental Conference in Rio de Janeiro, an act of courage and clarity well worth sharing. Download as a 4.8mb wmv file.

  1. this film is truly amazing. Yes, I agree with Dalry that the children of the world will be teaching us. They are already. It is a little like what occurs when you get older and you children start asking you “where have you been?” and “why didn’t you call, I was worried about you?” I have had this experience many times.
What this 12 year old says to us is very pertinent right now, and especially right here, as we watch more and more of a sacred place disappearing, on a daily basis.
We see thousands of tonnes of coal going past us every day, on its way from the Leigh Creek coal field to Port Augusta to make electricity and increase the carbon emissions.
We sit in the driest state in the driest country, right beside a mine which uses mega litres of our drinking water to process copper. They also use sulphuric acid leaching, which has been outlawed in most countries. The only barrier between that process and the aquifer is a few millimetres of plastic.
We hear of the dumping of toxic and radioactive refuse from a uranium exploration in a wilderness sanctuary, and the company responsible is still in operation.
To highlight these issues has not endeared us to people with vested interests. It has divided this town, it has divided families and I think is behind this whole push to discredit this community news service.
PIRSA came here last year to inform us of the processes required for mining companies to get licences for exploration and operation. At the end of the session he told us that we are the community watchdogs for the local mining concerns. The EPA would do their visits and inspections on a regular (and forewarned) basis. Otherwise, it is up to us. So we are doing our job according to PIRSA advice.
If the mining companies have issue with this, please speak to PIRSA…..they appointed us.
This child on the film is guiding us to speak up, to stand up for what we believe in. This I now do.
