post Parnell Calls for Ban on Mining at Arkaroola

Greens MLC Mark Parnell will again try to ban mining in the iconic Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary by introducing this week a Private Members Bill into State Parliament.

“The announcement today of the discovery by University of Melbourne researchers of a 650 million year old ancient underwater reef only 6 km from Arkaroola emphasises just how precious this area is,” Mr Parnell said.

“Some places are just too valuable to mine, and Arkaroola is clearly one of those,” he said.

Mark Parnell recently visited the Sanctuary to see first hand the damage caused by Marathon Resources, the company caught by police illegally dumping waste in shallow pits, and vandalising a unique rocky outcrop listed on the Register of the National Estate. The cleanup of the damage has yet to commence, while drilling activities have been suspended.

“As soon as Marathon cleans up their mess, the Rann Government must kick them out once and for all, and ensure no-one else can come in and do any more damage.

“As more and more details emerge about Marathon’s disgraceful behaviour, the need for permanent protection for this spectacular region has become even more urgent.

“Last time in Parliament I tried to protect all state-listed wilderness sanctuaries; but that Bill was defeated. Now I am concentrating just on Arkaroola. With prominent Liberals, including Nick Minchin and Iain Evans advocating similar protection, I look forward to the support of the Liberal Party and cross bench MPs when we come to a vote.

“The time to act is now. Marathon Resources must be given the boot, and all future mining banned from Arkaroola,” he said.

  1. Hope Mr Parnell invites Mr Rann and his colleges to check out The Oodnaminta Reef, maybe they should sit and hold their next session amid this incredible vista and decide the future of mining the area, instead of in their stuffy buildings where they are so out of touch…

  2. agreed….on all of it.
I do have a question though…where is all the flourite which disappeared while Marathon were drilling in the area? Do they have to return it?

  3. But hang on Mike, Minchin was the buffoon who approved the in-situ leaching Beverley mine despite its dangers and ‘then’ opposition from the so called traditionals, he is just a part of the smoke and mirrors game playing thats going on as are a lot of ‘others’ close to the scene of the crime who cry blue murder but have quite healthy cheque accounts courtesy of the Marathon Cowboys…this is a test of credibility and so far not many people are going to graduate 🙂

  4. hhmmmm…graduation…
or it is degradation from the higher purpose of guardianship, custodianship of all that is sacred?
    OK…lets be meaner….

While the ground shrivels up from lack of water
the clouds don’t gather to bring the rain
the storms pass by and leave only dust
why is this? how can this be thus?
Mines fill the water with acids and mud.
The sacred water of the underground
belongs to guardians of the tunnels
but they are filling with poisons
    do you care or understand?

The rocks and stones and fire sticks sit idle
lifted from the earth to which they belong
locked in cage breaking down in sun.
Discussion disunited all wanting a piece
to show the tourists taking their coin
    or ownership without the care
when returning home is all they want.

Now where is home to rocks and sticks
who can know this reasoning now
except the ancients who guard the place
who etched the rocks of red with story
to warn of what may happen next
    unless the message continues on
    beaming back to ancient time
that all is well, that we survive.

So touch the land with buried things
send back to guardian what he belongs
so he can pass the message on
which all forgot, from singing sounds
    from vibrating rocks, creations song
and return to garden the land around
return the rain singing in the storms
balance returned with touch of motherland.

The water of life which was always there
Is syphoned off by those who take
    precious minerals needed to communicate
    with those of the stars.
    message lost without smoky fire
    sending aloft to those above.
How will they know all is well?

guess it isn’t! as custodians sell
for plasma screens and processed food
and fire water to burn the brains
kill the body, injure the child
destroy the culture, bleed it dry
disconnect from land and all that is sacred.

Sell the future then pay it back
    pouring coins in singing machine
go begging for milk and bread,
the pride in self lost, esteem gone.
They tell you its your fault
but long standing plans have worked.

Take all away from prideless race
or kill with foods and drinks unknown
    missionise away control of destiny.
Knowing about the way to live here,
this spirit of land and trees and water
of sky and moon and stars above,
where ancestors travelled to come here
with understanding of soul and space.

    Forgetfulness of all this known
is drowned in poisons of air and land.
    and left bereft!
